The Panda Garra (Garra flavatra), often mistakenly called a loach due to its elongated body shape and bottom-dwelling behavior, actually belongs to the Cyprinid family (closely related to barbs and danios). They are native to the fast-flowing mountain streams of Myanmar (Burma).

They are incredibly active, bold, and excellent algae eaters with a unique black-and-gold banded pattern.

Here is the complete fact sheet in English:

Fact Sheet: Panda Garra (Garra flavatra)

Bottom-dweller, glass-climber, and surface-grazer

Difficulty

Easy to Moderate (requires highly oxygenated, clean water)

Water Parameters

Because they hail from pristine, high-oxygen mountain streams, they require stable water parameters and clean conditions.

  • Temperature: 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 78°F). They prefer cooler, well-circulated water and do not tolerate extreme heat well.

  • pH: 6.5 to 7.5 (Neutral).

  • Hardness (GH): Soft to moderately hard (2 to 12 dGH).

  • Flow & Oxygenation: Critical. They require strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen levels. Use a powerful filter (like a canister filter) combined with powerheads or wavemakers to simulate a river manifold system.

Feeding & Diet

Panda Garras are omnivores with a heavy herbivorous preference. They are legendary for cleaning aquariums, readily eating brown algae, soft green algae, biofilm, and occasionally Black Beard Algae (BBA).

  • Base Diet: Natural algae, biofilm, and high-quality sinking herbivore pellets/algae wafers.

  • Fresh Veggies: Slices of blanched zucchini, cucumber, or spinach.

  • Protein Supplement: They need occasional protein to thrive. Offer frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia once or twice a week.

Behavior & Compatibility

Unlike many nocturnal bottom-dwellers (like plecos), Panda Garras are completely diurnal and highly visible during the day. They constantly climb glass, rocks, and driftwood looking for food.

  • Socialization: It is highly recommended to keep them in a group of 4 to 6. If kept completely alone, a single garra can become dominant and pester tankmates. In a group, they establish a social hierarchy via harmless, short chases that dissipate their energy.

  • Tankmates: Excellent for community tanks with fast-moving or mid-water fish like tetras, danios, rasboras, and rainbowfish. They also live peacefully alongside robust bottom-dwellers like Corydoras.

Tank Setup & Important Warning

  • Escape Artists (Warning): Their modified mouth acts as a powerful suction cup, allowing them to cling to rocks in heavy rapids. In an aquarium, they can easily scale the glass and crawl through tiny gaps out of the tank. A tight-fitting lid with every opening sealed is mandatory.

  • Substrate: Smooth sand or rounded gravel to protect their flat bellies and sensory barbels while grazing.

  • Decor: Provide plenty of smooth river stones (perfect for biofilm growth) and driftwood. Broad-leafed, sturdy plants like Anubias and Java Fern are perfect, as they withstand high current and provide excellent perches where the garras love to sit and "lounge."
