Essential Care Guidelines
Diet & Feeding: They are strict carnivores. Feed them a base diet of high-quality commercial Betta pellets (2 to 4 pellets once or twice a day—do not overfeed). Supplement 1 to 2 times a week with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia.
Tank Setup: Because of their short fins and agile bodies, Plakats are excellent jumpers. A tight-fitting lid with no large gaps is mandatory.
Decorations: Use live plants (such as Anubias, Java Fern, or floating plants) and natural driftwood. If you use artificial decorations, choose silk plants only; stiff plastic plants can easily scratch their body or eyes.
Tankmates: They do best and are happiest when kept alone in a dedicated setup. In larger tanks (10 gallons or more), they can successfully share a tank with peaceful snails (like Nerite snails) or a small school of fast, mid-water swimming fish that do not nip fins (like Lambdachop or Harlequin Rasboras). Never house two males together.
