The Guppy is the most iconic and popular choice in the aquarium hobby. Renowned for their vibrant colors, striking tail variations, and active personalities, Guppies are perfect for both beginner hobbyists and advanced genetic breeders. They are highly adaptable, peaceful, and bring exceptional life and movement to any community tank.

Quick Reference and Water Parameters

Temperature: 72F to 79F (22C to 26C) pH Level: 7.0 to 8.5 (Prefer slightly alkaline water) Water Hardness: 10 to 25 dGH (Moderate to Hard) Minimum Tank Size: 10 Gallons (approx. 40 Liters) Diet: Omnivore (High-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen food) Temperament: Peaceful and Active

Key Care and Housing Requirements

Water Quality and Filtration: Guppies thrive in clean, well-filtered water with consistent parameters. Because male guppies feature large, flowing fins, it is highly recommended to use a sponge filter or a hang-on-back filter with adjustable flow. Strong, turbulent currents should be avoided to prevent them from exhausting themselves.

Aquascape and Environment: They feel most secure in a well-planted aquarium. Adding live plants such as Java Fern, Anubias, Hornwort, or floating species provides excellent shelter, closely mimicking their natural habitat and offering vital hiding spots for newborn fry.

Social Dynamics and Stocking Ratio: Guppies are highly social and should be kept in groups. If keeping a mixed-sex tank, always maintain a strict ratio of 1 male to 3 females. This distributes the males constant attention and prevents excessive stress on the females. Alternatively, an all-male tank is an excellent choice for a stunning display of colors without the risk of overpopulation.

Tank Compatibility: They are excellent candidates for peaceful community tanks. Ideal tankmates include Platies, Mollies, Corydoras, Neon Tetras, and various freshwater snails or shrimp. Avoid keeping them with notorious fin-nippers like Tiger Barbs or large, aggressive predators.

Feeding and Nutrition

Guppies are enthusiastic eaters and accept almost any food offered. To maintain their vibrant coloration and boost immune health, provide a varied diet:

Base Diet: Premium tropical flakes or micro-granules rich in Spirulina and vegetable matter.

Protein Boosts: Regular treats of live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia (Brine Shrimp), or Microworms.

Breeding Note

As livebearers, Guppies reproduce very easily. Females give birth to free-swimming fry roughly every 28 to 30 days. To maximize fry survival rates without stressing the parents, ensure the aquarium features dense patches of live moss or floating vegetation.
